On Saturday, USWNT players Christen Press and Tobin Heath (Manchester United) will go head-to-head against Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis (Manchester City). FULL PREVIEW HERE. Ahead of the Manchester Derby, Manchester City’s Ellen White spoke with reporters about her expectations for the game, as well as her thoughts on American teammates Lavelle and Mewis.
At the 2019 World Cup, the U.S. defeated England 2-1 in the semifinal round. Ellen White – competing in her third World Cup – scored England’s lone goal in the loss (as well as what looked like a momentary equalizer in the 68th minute before a VAR review concluded she was offside and the goal was called back).

When asked on Thursday if she had discussed that World Cup semifinal with Lavelle or Mewis, White joked, “That was one of the first [topics] we spoke about. I did say, ‘Why didn’t you bring your World Cup medal?'”
While White may not have a World Cup title of her own, she doesn’t hold that against her American teammates.
“First and foremost, they’re absolutely lovely people, amazing people,” she explains. “They are both so technically gifted…. Sam has some much drive and power in her game and Rose is so technically gifted, in the way she drives and dribbles… Together, they have brought so much and they are really important member of the squad.”
White also complimented the competitive energy that Lavelle and Mewis bring to training sessions. “It’s quite frustrating when they keep scoring in training, in the various games that we have, if you’re on the losing side.”
